Course Description

Mac OS X Server Essentials is a four-day, hands-on course that provides technical coordinators and entry-level system administrators with the skills, tools, and knowledge to implement and maintain a Mac OS X Server–based system. Students will learn how to install and configure Mac OS X Server to provide network-based services, such as file sharing, email, and printing. Tools for efficiently managing a group of Macintosh clients is also covered.

This class is for Mac OS X technical coordinators and entry-level system administrators who are tasked with implementing and maintaining Mac OS X Server–based systems.

Configure Mac OS X Server after it has been installed and begin using its server management tools.


Network Services

Describe the basic function and purpose of DHCP and DNS. Configure Mac OS X Server to provide basic DHCP and DNS services. Troubleshoot DHCP and DNS.


Authentication and Authorization

Use Workgroup Manager to create user accounts and groups that limit access to network-based services and resources provided by Mac OS X Server.


Files Services
Provide AFP, SMB, NFS, and FTP file services from Mac OS X Server.


Print Services

Provide and manage print services from Mac OS X Server.


Web Services

Provide web and media services from Mac OS X Server. Serving media files with QuickTime Streaming Server is introduced.


Mail Services

Provide mail services from Mac OS X Server.


Firewall and NAT

Protect services running on Mac OS X Server with an IP firewall. Share an Internet connection with clients using Network Address Translation (NAT).


Open Directory

Manage distributed user accounts, groups, passwords, and system resources using Mac OS X Server.


Client Management

Use Workgroup Manager to control user access to network resources, workstations, and peripherals.

Use Mac OS X Server to provide network-based installation and custom boot services to Mac OS X workstations.
